Timber was the sole material of manufacturing for these instruments centuries ago and this is the motive to name them the woodwinds actually. Labial and lingual are the versions of the woodwind instruments after the way of the air blowing in them. In labials the air is winded into special lateral hole in the head of the instrument. A single reed is a slender cane, which closes the aperture in the mouthpiece of the instrument and leaves a thin chink. When you are breathing the air inside, the reed is resonating with a huge frequency opening and closing the canal inside the instrument. A double reed is a tight bond of two canes in the mouthpiece.
